Without any suspense, you absolutely can teach English abroad – or online – even without a university degree! In fact, in some countries it’s totally the norm.
If you’ve ever dreamed of jet-setting around the globe, making a real difference, and diving into new cultures, but thought a lack of degree was the thing in your way, think again! The adventure is calling, and you’re invited.
All around Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Europe, schools are rolling out the welcome mat for passionate English teachers who have a 120-hour online TEFL certificate from a reputable provider, even if you are not a native English speaker. While countries like South Korea or Japan do want a degree, places like Cambodia, Vietnam, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Poland (just to name a few!) are thrilled to hire teachers who bring energy, heart, and great English skills – degree or not.
The best part? Online TEFL courses are now super affordable, flexible, and can be done from the comfort of your couch (just like we offer here at TEFLmasters – an English teaching certicate that happens to come from completing arguably the best TEFL course, though of course we’re biased). You could get TEFL certified and ready to teach English abroad (or online) in what feels like no time. Whether you’re planning to teach English in China in a buzzing city, in Thailand by the beach, in a cozy mountain town in Colombia, or from your laptop as an online ESL teacher, there’s a place for you.
Schools everywhere are searching for lively, upbeat personalities who spark confidence in their students. They want proof you know your stuff (that’s your TEFL certificate!), but what matters most is your attitude and your willingness to help students really speak English.
So what are you waiting for? The world is wide open – no degree required! Get TEFL certified online with just a few clicks (okay, maybe a few hundred clicks—you’ll need to read, watch, and click through our fun, interactive material). With TEFLmasters, getting your TEFL certification isn’t just budget-friendly, it’s genuinely engaging and easy to finish. We’ve got videos to match the text, and you won’t be stuck writing tedious essays or lesson plans – we introduce you to fun ways to teach English!
So go ahead: grab your TEFL, pack your bags (or power up your laptop), and get ready to start your global teaching adventure. Your journey starts now – degree or no degree. You can check out our handy guide below for details of some countries not requiring English teachers to have a degree.

To teach English abroad or online to speakers of other languages, you need to understand how the English language is constructed, how to control and motivate your students, and know different methods and techniques at your disposal to best reach the different ability- and age-levels of your classes. Most employers and schools require a TEFL certificate or a university degree, and sometimes even both! We can help you with TEFL certification UK and worldwide, because our courses are fully online. Our experienced TEFL teachers provide full support throughout your online learning journey, though the way our courses are structured means your experience will be easy and self-explanatory. All lessons include full text and videos to help you learn, while your knowledge is measured 100% by quizzes. Our accredited 120-hour TEFL course prepares you for teaching English online or in-person:
To teach English, you'll want TEFL certification: our premium fee includes QR-embedded, self-print certificates.
We are qualified, experienced teachers: we know exactly what you need to know to be successful.
Rather than rely on boring essays, we measure your progress with quizzes and online lesson-flows.
It’s free to try and affordable to learn. For this price, you get full access to all of our wonderful content (videos and text) and receive digital certification when you pass the 120-hour TEFL course. This is emailed and stored on our site for employers to view with your certificate code and password. Our course is cheap because it’s pre-made, so we want students to benefit from it. The quality of cheap TESOL courses can vary; with that in mind, we know you’ll be skeptical about our content, so we decided to open up some lessons for you; if you’re not satisfied, don’t buy it. But we guarantee the aesthetics and quality of the content is as good in the paid lessons as it is in the free ones.
Officially, it’s neither, because those are OFQUAL’s terms. Our 120-hour TEFL course covers all of the same topics, theory, and knowledge as other 120-hour TEFL course, whether they are Level 3 or not. It’s a bit like trying to highlight the difference between an Apple iPhone and Samsung Galaxy smartphone – they both share similar capibilities on 99% of checkpoints, but they differ ever so slightly on what they offer for the other 1% of capabilities. Our 120-hour TEFL course is a Level-3 equivalent. OFQUAL regulation (which is different from accreditation) costs many thousands of pounds per year – we are not willing to pay that money, which inevitably gets passed on to students. Our course speaks for itself in terms of quality, but we are also accredited independently. Employers look for 120-hour TEFL certification in most cases, as do other officials such as education boards. Our 168-hour TEFL course, which we will include on the site soon, is a Level 5 TEFL course equivalent, but this is only really recommended for those seeking positions with young learners. With that said, most teachers find the 120-hour online TEFL course to be sufficient for all of their English teaching needs.
When you enroll, you receive expert TEFL training which includes text and video content (including real-life examples of experienced teachers taking classes). There are 22 different units included (as well as bonus units), which are assessed via fully online quizzes. The $99 $44 certificate package includes digital TEFL certification in the form of an emailed printable PDF with a QR code. You will also receive access to an online, password-protected certificate that can be shared with prospective employers for peace of mind. The printable version can be used for e-apostille services with the FCO. We happily acknowledge such requests from the UK.gov organisation. Should you wish a paper hardcopy version embossed on a foil label, we can also arrange this for a fee. Try our lessons for free first, if you have any doubts. The course comes with a 14-day moneyback guarantee for unused courses.
Yes. In this industry, we tend to use TEFL and TESOL interchangeably, evem though there is a slight difference. TEFL and TESOL are generally used with ESL to mean the same thing; although, in our course, you’ll learn that they’re a bit different (technically). Our certificates actually say both TEFL certification and TESOL certifcation, so don’t worry.
Everyone over 18 years old (or with guardian permission to do the course, if under 18).
The TEFLmasters 120-hour course is open to all fluent English speakers interested in learning EFL theory and skills that help learners become confident, knowledgeable, and effective English language teachers.
Additional qualifications may be required to find EFL work in certain countries after gaining certification, but there are no pre-entry educational requirements to enroll in our TEFL/TESOL certification course. We allow unlimited quiz re-takes per lesson.
It’s free to try, our content is fantastic, and it’s likely the best cheapest course in the world! Also, you complete only unit quizzes – there are no essays – which most students now write using AI anyway! Even if you require physical (professionally embossed) hardcopy certification, TEFLmasters is significantly cheaper than all (or almost all) other TEFL course providers. As a provider, we are accredited and registered with a UK government funded department as an official learning provider. Additionally, our 120-hour online TEFL course is accredited. It’s a course made by experienced TEFL professionals who still teach. If you want to become an EFL teacher, we promise you the best quality 120-hour course.
No. We use online quizzes to measure your progress. You simply fill in your answers about the lesson, submit, and move on to the next lesson. Questions are multiple choice, just like life. All unit quizzes must be completed to a satisfactory standard of 75%. You may resit unit quizzes not completed satisfactorily.
This varies depending on which country you want to teach in, whether it is for kindergarten or university, and on your school. TEFL certification, is not required by some countries or schools. However, studying the course definitely helps you become a better teacher and increases your classroom confidence.
No. Learning is $99 $44. This includes digital certificates (including PDF certificate and transcript emailed to you, as well as an online copy for prospective employers to verify using your certificate code). You’ll struggle to find accredited TEFL course certification cheaper elsewhere, and won’t find it this price for the high quality. You can print our certificates and use them for finding jobs and legalising. We happily verify your completed course status when asked.
Where on this amazing planet will you teach EFL?

Our 22 units provide you with useful information and training that leaves you feeling prepared and confident to teach EFL either in a classroom or online. You learn about the structure of the English language, classroom management skills, and all the latest approaches, methods, and techniques for teaching English to a range of learners. After completing all online unit quizzes with adequate understanding, you are TEFL certified, and you will be ready to search for jobs online using our job search links. Unfortunately, we no longer offer our 300-hour online TEFL course but have now launched our newly-accredited 168-hour TEFL course online (this is equivalent to a Level-5 TEFL training course), and naturally it is also an affordable TESOL course that we sell with pride.
