FAQ
Finding a TEFL job: your questions
How do I find a TEFL job abroad?
Get your TEFL certificate, decide which countries you're eligible for, then apply through trusted recruiters and job boards like the ones on this page. Big global boards such as Teach Away and ESLbase are a good start, and country recruiters are best once you know where you want to go.
Do recruiters charge teachers a fee?
Reputable recruiters are free for teachers, because schools pay them. Be careful with any recruiter or school that asks you to pay a placement fee or to work on a tourist visa.
Do I need a degree to teach English abroad?
For a work visa in most of Asia and the Middle East, yes. Parts of Latin America and Southeast Asia, and online teaching, are more flexible. See our guide to teaching English without a degree.
Which countries pay English teachers the most?
Hong Kong and the Gulf states (the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait) pay the most, but they usually want experience or a teaching license. South Korea, China and Taiwan are often the best for saving as a new teacher.
Can I teach in Europe without an EU passport?
It's harder, but possible. Government programs such as Spain's language assistant program and France's TAPIF accept some non-EU applicants, and the Czech Republic and Poland are more open to non-EU teachers.
How do I spot a bad job?
Walk away if a school won't sponsor a proper work visa, asks you to pay a fee, won't put pay and hours in a contract or won't let you speak to a current foreign teacher.
Is the TEFLmasters certificate accepted abroad?
Yes. Our courses are accredited by OTCAC, and our graduates have used their certificates for teaching visas in South Korea, China, Vietnam, Thailand and Taiwan. Every certificate has a QR code employers can check.
