What TEFL really costs in 2026
Five kinds of TEFL course, compared
Prices vary a lot, and big providers often run sales, so compare what's included, not just the headline price.
| Kind of course | Typical price | Hours | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Very cheap deal sites | Under $20 | Often "120" | Trying TEFL out | Often no independent accreditation, no tutor and no way for employers to verify the certificate |
| Affordable accredited online TEFLmasters | $29 to $69 | 120 to 220 | Most online and entry to mid-tier jobs abroad | Not Ofqual-regulated, not CELTA |
| Big-brand online courses | Around $300 to $550 list, often on sale | 120 to 170 | The same jobs as above | Paying more for the brand and advertising |
| Ofqual-regulated Level 5 online | Around $700+ list, often discounted | 168+ | Jobs or visas that ask for Level 5 by name | Shorter access periods, higher price |
| CELTA or Trinity CertTESOL | Usually well over $1,000 | 120+ with observed teaching | British Council, many European schools, long-term careers | Intensive, and the cost is hard to recover in entry-level jobs |
Examples checked in October 2026: The TEFL Academy listed its online Level 5 at $743, on sale for $297, and The TEFL Org's 120-hour Premier course was listed at $549 on Go Overseas. Prices change often, so always check the provider's own website before you enroll.

Choosing a TEFL course
Choosing a TEFL course: FAQs
It depends on the job you want. For most online and entry to mid-tier teaching jobs, an independently accredited 120-hour course with real assessment, tutor support and a verifiable certificate is enough. If a job asks for CELTA, DELTA or Level 5 by name, choose one of those instead.
Not necessarily. Many big-brand courses cost several hundred dollars partly because of advertising. Compare accreditation, hours, assessment, support and how employers can verify the certificate, not just the price.
A Level 5 is a higher, Ofqual-regulated qualification, and some employers and visas ask for it by name. Most online and entry to mid-tier jobs ask for 120 hours, so you only need a Level 5 if the job advert says so.
CELTA is excellent if you're aiming for the British Council, many European schools or a long-term TEFL career. It's intensive, includes observed teaching and usually costs well over $1,000, so for entry-level jobs an accredited 120-hour course is often the better value.
Check that the accreditor is named, independent and lists the course on its own website. Look for reference numbers, then look the provider up yourself rather than using a link the provider gives you.
TEFLmasters' 120-hour Online Specialist course costs $29 and is accredited by OTCAC, with a QR-verified certificate. IntrepidTEFL's $27 course is also accredited. Cheaper deals exist, but they're often not independently accredited and their certificates can be hard for employers to verify.
Most care that the certificate is from an accredited course of at least 120 hours and that they can verify it. Some ask for CELTA, DELTA or Level 5 by name, and they say so in the job advert.
For most online and entry-level jobs abroad, an accredited online course is accepted. In-person courses add observed teaching practice, which some employers prefer. You can add a 24-hour practicum to some TEFLmasters courses.
120 hours is the standard most employers ask for. Choose 168 hours if you'll teach children, or 220 hours if you also want Business English or a broader training profile.
