The documents you'll need as an American

Paperwork is the slowest part of teaching abroad. The US is in the Apostille Convention, but federal and state documents are apostilled in different places, which catches a lot of people out.

Required for Asia

FBI background check

Request your Identity History Summary from the FBI, then get it apostilled by the US Department of State, as it's a federal document.

Required

Degree, apostilled

A notarized copy of your diploma, apostilled by the Secretary of State in the state where your university is. EPIK also asks for sealed transcripts.

Expected

120-hour TEFL certificate

Needed for EPIK and most jobs in China. Ours can be notarized and apostilled for the visa.

Required

Passport

Valid for at least six months beyond your contract, with empty pages. Renew early if it's close to expiring.

Sometimes

Health check

Korea and China do a medical check after you arrive, and some programs ask for a health form first.

Easy to forget

Photos and resume

Passport photos in a few sizes and a resume with a professional headshot, which Asian schools expect.

FAQ

TEFL for Americans: your questions

Do Americans need a TEFL certificate to teach English abroad?

In most countries, yes. Many schools and recruiters ask for a 120-hour TEFL, Korea's EPIK program only hires at pay levels that need a 100+ hour TEFL or a teaching degree, and China's work permit asks for a TEFL or two years of teaching experience.

Is an online TEFL accepted in Korea, China and Japan?

Yes. Online TEFL certificates are widely accepted in Asia as long as they're at least 100 to 120 hours and from an accredited provider. Our courses are accredited by OTCAC, and our graduates have used their certificates for teaching visas in South Korea, China, Vietnam, Thailand and Taiwan.

How do I apostille my FBI background check?

Request your Identity History Summary from the FBI, then send it to the US Department of State's Office of Authentications for an apostille, as it's a federal document. Your degree is different: a notarized copy is apostilled by the Secretary of State in the state where your university is.

Can Americans teach English in Europe?

Yes, but it takes planning. Spain's language assistant program and France's TAPIF accept US citizens and pay a monthly stipend, and the Czech Republic and Germany have freelance routes. Most private schools in the EU can't easily sponsor non-EU teachers.

Can I teach English abroad without a degree?

Your options are narrower, but yes. Cambodia, parts of Latin America and online teaching are the most flexible. See our guide to teaching English without a degree.

Can I teach ESL in the US with a TEFL?

A TEFL can help you teach online and at private language schools, adult education programs and community organizations. Teaching in a US public school needs a state teaching license, which a TEFL doesn't replace.

Is a $49 TEFL course legit?

Price isn't the same as quality. Our 120-hour course is accredited by OTCAC and CPD-verified, we're a UK registered learning provider and every certificate has a QR code employers can check. The low price is because it's fully online and self-paced, with no classroom costs.

How long does the course take?

It's self-paced, so it's up to you. The $49 course gives you 12 months to finish and our other courses give you 24. Many people finish much sooner while they get their visa documents ready.
