Our honest advice: if you want to teach abroad or online, most employers ask for "a 120-hour TEFL". If you want to teach at an Australian ELICOS college, you'll usually need a CELTA or similar instead. Check the job adverts first, so you don't spend more than you need to.

FAQ

TEFL courses in Australia: your questions

Is a cheap online TEFL course legit?

Yes, if it's accredited and the hours are real. Our 120-hour course is accredited by OTCAC and we're CPD-verified. We're also a UK registered learning provider (UKPRN 10089401), and every certificate has a QR code employers can check. It costs less because it's fully online and self-paced.

TEFL, CELTA or Cert IV in TESOL: which do I need?

It depends where you want to teach. Australian ELICOS colleges usually ask for a CELTA, Trinity CertTESOL or a postgraduate TESOL qualification, and a Cert IV in TESOL suits community programs. To teach abroad or online, most employers ask for a 120-hour TEFL, which costs far less.

Which background check do Australians need for South Korea?

An AFP National Police Check. State police checks aren't accepted. Get it apostilled by DFAT, and make sure it's dated within six months of your visa application.

How do I apostille my degree in Australia?

Have a notary public certify a copy of your degree, then get it apostilled by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), by post or at a DFAT office.

Can Australians teach English abroad without a degree?

Your options are narrower, but yes. Australia has Working Holiday agreements with many countries, and Cambodia, parts of Latin America and online teaching are more flexible. See our guide to teaching English without a degree.

Can I pay in Australian dollars?

You pay in US dollars by card or PayPal, and your bank converts it, so $49 is about A$71. Some cards add a small foreign transaction fee.

Is an online TEFL accepted in Korea, China and Japan?

Yes. Online TEFL certificates of 100 to 120 hours from accredited providers are widely accepted in Asia, and our graduates have used theirs for teaching visas in South Korea, China, Vietnam, Thailand and Taiwan.

How long does the course take?

It's self-paced. Our 120-hour Premium TEFL gives you 12 months to finish and our other courses give you 24, and many people finish much sooner.
