The honest comparison

Online TEFL vs CELTA: which do you really need?

CELTA is an excellent qualification, but it costs around 80 times more than an accredited online TEFL. For most jobs abroad and online, employers ask for "a 120-hour TEFL", not CELTA by name. Here's when each one makes sense, side by side, plus a quick quiz to tell you which is right for you.

FAQ

Online TEFL vs CELTA: your questions

Is CELTA better than an online TEFL?

CELTA is more intensive and includes assessed teaching practice, so it's a great qualification. But for most jobs abroad and online, employers ask for a 120-hour TEFL, and an accredited online TEFL meets that for a fraction of the price. CELTA is worth it when a job asks for it by name.

Is an online TEFL accepted instead of CELTA?

For most jobs, yes. Schools in South Korea, China, Vietnam, Thailand, Japan, Taiwan and Latin America, and most online platforms, ask for a 120-hour TEFL rather than CELTA specifically. Our graduates have used their online certificates for teaching visas in several of these countries.

Do I need CELTA to teach in Korea or China?

No. South Korea's EPIK program asks for a TEFL of at least 100 hours, and China's work permit rules ask for a TEFL certificate or two years of teaching experience. An accredited 120-hour online TEFL meets both.

When is CELTA worth the money?

When you want to teach in a language school in the UK, Ireland or Australia, when an employer asks for it by name or when you're planning a long career in English teaching and might go on to the DELTA later.

Is CELTA a TEFL?

Yes. CELTA is a type of TEFL qualification, awarded by Cambridge English. TEFL is the general name for qualifications in teaching English as a foreign language, and CELTA is one well-known brand of it.

Can I do an online TEFL now and CELTA later?

Yes, and many teachers do. Start with an online TEFL to get your first job, then take CELTA later if your career needs it. The teaching experience you gain in between will make CELTA much easier.

How can I get teaching practice without paying for CELTA?

Choose a Practical course, where you can send 2 lesson plans for a tutor to mark within 24 hours. For real classroom practice, ask about our teaching practicum. If you need live teaching practice, ask us about our 24-hour practicum.

How long does each course take?

CELTA usually takes 4 intense weeks full time or about 10 to 12 weeks part time. Our online TEFL is self-paced, with 12 or 24 months to finish, and many people finish in a few weeks.
