FAQ

Is TEFL worth it? Your questions

Is TEFL worth it?

For most people who want to teach English abroad or online, yes. Many employers and some visa rules ask for a 120-hour TEFL, so without one your choices shrink fast. An accredited online TEFL costs far less than a month's pay in most teaching jobs.

Is TEFL worth it without a degree?

It can be. Without a degree, the TEFL is often the main thing employers check, especially for online teaching, Cambodia and parts of Latin America. Most of Asia and the Middle East need a degree for the work visa, though. See our guide to teaching English without a degree.

Is an online TEFL worth it?

Yes, if it's accredited and meets the 120-hour standard. Online TEFL certificates are widely accepted, including for teaching visas in South Korea, China, Vietnam and Thailand, and they cost a fraction of an in-person course.

When is a TEFL not worth it?

If you want to teach in public schools in your own country, you'll need a teaching license instead. And if you already have CELTA or a teaching license in ESL, a TEFL adds less, though some visas still ask for one by name.

Do I need a TEFL to teach online?

Not always, but it helps a lot. Many platforms and private students look for a TEFL, and on italki it's one of the credentials you can use to apply for a Professional Teacher profile.

How much can I earn with a TEFL?

It depends on where you teach. Language centers in Vietnam pay about 450,000 to 650,000 VND an hour, full-time academy jobs in Spain pay about €1,200 to €1,600 a month and private lessons pay more. Our country guides have the details.

How long does a TEFL take?

A 120-hour online TEFL is self-paced. Many people finish in a few weeks, and you get 12 or 24 months depending on the course.

What if I start and change my mind?

There's a 14-day money-back guarantee on unused courses. A full refund isn't possible once you've gone beyond Unit 4. See the terms for details.
