The honest answer

Where can Indian teachers teach English?

A TEFL certificate opens a lot of doors, but visa rules depend on your passport. Here's where Indian teachers find work, where it's harder and where it's usually closed.

Open to Indian teachers

Your best places to start.

  • Online, from homeTeach students worldwide on platforms or privately. No visa needed.
  • IndiaSpoken English institutes, IELTS coaching, international schools and corporate training.
  • Thailand and CambodiaBoth hire non-native teachers. Thailand needs a degree, and some schools ask for a TOEIC or IELTS score. Thailand guide
  • JapanJapan doesn't limit teaching visas by nationality. You need a degree, and strong English matters. Japan guide

Possible, but harder

Worth it with the right profile.

  • The Middle EastGulf schools hire many Indian teachers, especially Indian-curriculum schools that want a B.Ed. English-only roles often prefer native passports.
  • Vietnam and TaiwanPossible with a degree, a TEFL and a high IELTS or TOEIC score, but many schools prefer native speakers.
  • Europe and Latin AmericaWork permits are the hurdle, not your English. Look for schools that sponsor visas.

Usually closed

Check carefully before you plan around these.

  • ChinaEnglish teaching work permits usually go to citizens of 7 native English-speaking countries.
  • South KoreaThe E-2 visa for English teachers is normally limited to the same 7 countries. Ask the embassy about any exceptions.
  • Hong Kong NET SchemeThe government scheme is for native-speaking English teachers.

Visa rules change often. Always check with the employer and the embassy before you accept a job or pay any fees.

FAQ

TEFL in India: your questions

Can Indians teach English abroad?

Yes. Indian teachers work in Thailand, Cambodia, Japan, the Middle East and many other countries, and online all over the world. A few countries, such as China and South Korea, usually only give English teaching visas to citizens of native English-speaking countries, so it's worth knowing where you're eligible before you apply.

Is a TEFL certificate valid in India?

Yes. Spoken English institutes, IELTS coaching centers, international schools and online platforms in India all value a TEFL certificate. For permanent jobs in Indian government and CBSE schools you'll still need a B.Ed, as a TEFL doesn't replace it.

How do I pay from India?

You pay in US dollars by card or PayPal on our learning platform, tefl.institute. Your bank converts it to rupees, so $29 is about ₹2,800, plus any small foreign exchange fee your bank charges. Make sure international transactions are switched on for your card in your banking app.

Can I teach English online from India?

Yes, and it's the quickest way to start. Platforms such as Preply let you set your own rate, and you can also teach private students. You don't need a visa, but you do need good internet, a quiet space and a TEFL certificate to stand out.

Do I need IELTS to teach English abroad?

Not always, but it helps. Some schools and visa routes ask non-native speakers for an IELTS or TOEIC score to prove their level of English. A high score, a degree and a TEFL certificate together make a strong application.

Which TEFL course should I choose?

If you mainly want to teach online, the $29 Online Specialist course covers what you need. If you want to teach abroad or with a tutor's support, choose the $49 Premium course, and if you want to teach children, the $59 168-hour course adds 11 young learner units.

How do I get my documents apostilled in India?

India is part of the Apostille Convention, so the Ministry of External Affairs apostilles Indian documents such as your degree, usually after state attestation. Your background check is a Police Clearance Certificate from Passport Seva. Our certificate can be notarized and apostilled too.

Is the TEFLmasters certificate accepted?

Our courses are accredited by OTCAC, and every certificate has a QR code employers can check online. Employers decide who they hire, so always read the job advert, but a 120-hour accredited TEFL is the standard most ask for.
