The documents you'll need from South Africa

Paperwork is the slowest part of teaching abroad. South Africa is in the Apostille Convention, so most documents get an apostille from DIRCO (some through the High Court).

Required

Bachelor's degree, apostilled

Any subject. Get a certified copy of your degree apostilled. Korea's EPIK program also asks for sealed transcripts.

Required

SAPS police clearance

A Police Clearance Certificate from the SAPS Criminal Record Centre, apostilled by DIRCO. It can take weeks, and Korea and China want it recent, so time it carefully.

Expected

120-hour TEFL certificate

Needed for EPIK and most Chinese jobs. Ours can be notarized and apostilled for the visa.

Required

Passport

Valid for at least six months beyond your contract, with empty pages for visas and stamps.

Sometimes

Health check

Korea and China do a medical check after you arrive. Some schools ask for a health form first.

Easy to forget

Photos and resume

Passport photos in a few sizes and a resume with a professional headshot, which Asian schools expect.

FAQ

TEFL in South Africa: your questions

Can South Africans teach English in South Korea and China?

Yes. South Africa is one of the 7 countries whose citizens can get South Korea's E-2 visa and China's English teaching work permit, along with the US, UK, Canada, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. You'll also need a bachelor's degree, a clean police clearance and, for most jobs, a TEFL certificate.

Do I need a degree to teach English abroad?

For most work visas in Asia and the Middle East, yes, in any subject. Without a degree, you can teach online, or look at the countries on our guide to teaching English without a degree.

How much can South Africans save teaching abroad?

New teachers in South Korea and China often save $800 to $1,500 a month, helped by free or subsidized housing. That's roughly R13,000 to R25,000 a month at today's exchange rate.

How long does a SAPS police clearance take?

It often takes several weeks, and it then needs an apostille from DIRCO. Korea and China want it to be recent, usually issued within six months of your visa application, so time it carefully and start early.

How do I pay for the course from South Africa?

You pay in US dollars by card or PayPal on teflmasters.com. Most South African cards work for international payments, and your bank converts it to rand, so $49 is about R811 plus any small foreign exchange fee.

Can I teach English online from South Africa?

Yes. Platforms such as Preply let you set your own rate, and some platforms prefer teachers from native English-speaking countries, which includes South Africa. You'll need good internet and a backup for power cuts.

Are there TEFL jobs in South Africa itself?

A few. Language schools in Cape Town and Johannesburg teach English to international students, and some hire TEFL-qualified teachers. Most South African TEFL teachers work online or abroad.

Is the TEFLmasters certificate accepted in Korea and China?

Yes. Our courses are accredited by OTCAC, and our graduates have used their certificates for teaching visas in South Korea, China, Vietnam, Thailand and Taiwan. Every certificate has a QR code employers can check online.
