Teaching English to children

TEFL for teaching young learners

Many TEFL jobs, especially in Asia, are with children. Teaching a class of seven-year-olds is very different from teaching adults: shorter activities, more movement, phonics and a lot of praise. Here's what you need to know, where the jobs are and how to get trained.

Age by age

What works with each age group

Children aren't small adults. Pick an age group to see how lessons change.

Ages 3 to 5

Kindergarten

Very short attention spans, lots of energy and no reading yet.

  • Change activity every 5 to 10 minutes
  • Teach through songs, actions, flashcards and play
  • Use routines so every lesson feels safe and familiar
  • Start phonics with letter sounds, not letter names

Ages 6 to 11

Primary school

Curious and keen to please, starting to read and write in English.

  • Use games with clear rules and points
  • Build phonics into blending and simple reading
  • Teach the most common sight words
  • Praise effort and give simple jobs in class

Ages 12 to 16

Middle and high school

Self-conscious, social and ready for real communication.

  • Use topics they care about, such as music, games and social media
  • Mix pair and group work so no one feels put on the spot
  • Give clear goals, such as exams or projects
  • Set fair rules early and stick to them

The skill schools ask about

Phonics and sight words, made simple

Phonics teaches children the sound each letter makes, then how to blend the sounds into words. Sight words are common words such as "the" and "said" that don't follow the rules, so children learn them by sight.

Try it: tap each sound, then hear the word come together

This is blending, one of the first reading skills you'll teach. Unit 11 of our young learner course shows you how to teach it step by step.

Classroom management

Keep a class of kids happy and on track

  • Short, active activitiesChange what you're doing often, and plan for movement before kids start to fidget.
  • The same routine every lessonA hello song, a warm-up and a goodbye game help children know what's coming.
  • Praise more than you correctPoints, stickers and specific praise work far better than telling off.
  • Games with a purposeEvery game should practice the language of the lesson, not just fill time.

FAQ

Teaching young learners: your questions

Do I need special training to teach young learners?

Most TEFL jobs don't ask for a separate certificate, but many of them, especially in Asia, are with children. Training in young learners shows schools you can manage a class of kids, plan short, active lessons and teach phonics, which often comes up at interview.

Is a 120-hour TEFL enough to teach children?

It meets the hours most employers ask for, and our 120-hour course covers the basics of teaching all ages. If you know you'll be teaching children, the 168-hour course adds 40 hours on young learners, which gives you more ideas and confidence in class.

What does the 168-hour TEFL add?

Everything in the 120-hour Practical course, plus 40 hours on teaching young learners across 11 units, including phonics and sight words, and 8 hours on teaching adults. You get 168-hour and 120-hour certificates.

What are phonics and sight words?

Phonics teaches children the sounds letters make and how to blend them into words, such as c-a-t making cat. Sight words are common words, such as the, said and was, that children learn to recognize by sight because they don't follow the usual sound rules.

What age groups will I teach?

It depends on the job. Kindergartens teach ages 3 to 5, primary schools and most private academies teach ages 6 to 11, and middle and high schools teach teens. Many teachers in Asia teach more than one age group in a week.

How do you manage a class of young learners?

Clear routines, simple rules, short activities and lots of praise. Plan for movement, change activities often and use the same signals every lesson, such as a song or a clap, to get attention back.

Can I teach children online?

Yes. Many online students are children, and some kids' platforms pay more than adult ones. The same skills apply: short activities, props, songs and lots of praise, plus good lighting and a bright background.

Which course should I choose to teach children?

The 168-hour TEFL for $69 is our young learner course. If you'd like Business English too, the 220-hour TEFL for $79 includes the same young learner units. Both include 2 optional lesson plan assignments marked by a tutor.
