Teaching abroad?

The documents you'll need from Brazil

Brazil is part of the Apostille Convention, so any cartório can apostille your documents for use abroad. Start early, as some countries also want translations.

Usually required

Diploma and transcript

Your diploma (diploma de graduação) and transcript (histórico escolar), apostilled at a cartório. Some countries also ask for a sworn translation.

Usually required

Background check

The Certidão de Antecedentes Criminais from the Polícia Federal. You can request it online, then apostille it at a cartório.

Expected

120-hour TEFL certificate

The standard most schools and platforms ask for. Ours can be notarized and apostilled for a visa.

Often helps

IELTS, TOEIC or Cambridge score

Many schools abroad ask non-native speakers to prove their English. A C1 or C2 level makes a strong impression.

A big plus

EU passport

If you have Italian, Portuguese or another EU citizenship, it opens up teaching jobs across Europe.

Required

Brazilian passport

Valid for at least six months beyond your contract. Check the visa rules for the country well before you fly.

FAQ

TEFL in Brazil: your questions

Can Brazilians teach English abroad?

Yes. Brazilian teachers work across Latin America, in Japan, Cambodia and Thailand and in Europe with an EU passport, as well as online all over the world. A few countries, such as China and South Korea, usually only give English teaching visas to citizens of 7 native English-speaking countries, so check where you're eligible before you apply.

Can Brazilians teach English in Korea or China?

Usually not as an English teacher. South Korea's E-2 visa and China's English teaching work permit are normally limited to the US, UK, Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Japan and much of Latin America are far more open to Brazilian teachers.

Can I teach English in Europe as a Brazilian?

If you have Italian, Portuguese or another EU citizenship, yes: you can work in any EU country, and language academies in Spain, Portugal and Italy hire fluent non-native teachers with a TEFL. Without an EU passport, work visas for English teaching in Europe are hard to get.

Which online platforms accept Brazilian teachers?

Preply is open to fluent teachers of any nationality and lets you set your own rate. On italki, a TEFL certificate is one of the credentials you can use to apply for a Professional Teacher profile. Requirements change, so check each platform before you apply.

How do I pay for the course from Brazil?

You pay in US dollars by card or PayPal on teflmasters.com. $49 is about R$ 245, plus the IOF tax and any fee your bank adds to international purchases. Make sure your card is enabled for international purchases (compras internacionais).

Do I need a TEFL if I already teach English in Brazil?

Not to keep your job, but it helps you move up and move abroad. A TEFL shows schools, online platforms and employers in other countries that you're trained in teaching English as a second language, with an internationally recognized certificate.

How do I get my documents apostilled in Brazil?

Brazil is part of the Apostille Convention, so any cartório can apostille your diploma and other Brazilian documents for use abroad. Your background check is the Certidão de Antecedentes Criminais from the Polícia Federal, which you can request online. Our certificate can be notarized and apostilled too.

Is the TEFLmasters certificate accepted?

Our courses are accredited by OTCAC, and every certificate has a QR code employers can check online. Employers decide who they hire, so always read the job advert, but a 120-hour accredited TEFL is the standard most ask for.
