The honest comparison

Cheap TEFL vs Level 5 vs CELTA

UK providers often push Level 5 courses that cost much more. Here's what each one is for, so you only pay for what your job actually needs.

Our honest advice: most schools and recruiters abroad ask for "a 120-hour TEFL", not a UK level. Check the adverts for the jobs you want. If they ask for Level 5 or CELTA by name, get that. If not, there's no need to spend hundreds more.

The documents you'll need from the UK

The UK is in the Apostille Convention, and the FCDO Legalisation Office apostilles UK documents. Most countries in Asia ask for these.

Required

Degree, apostilled

Have a solicitor or notary certify a copy of your degree certificate, then get it apostilled by the FCDO.

Required for Asia

Basic DBS or ACRO

A Basic DBS (or Basic Disclosure in Scotland), or an ACRO Police Certificate, apostilled by the FCDO. Time it carefully, as Korea wants it issued within six months of your start date.

Expected

120-hour TEFL certificate

Needed for EPIK and most jobs in China. Ours can be notarized and apostilled for the visa.

Required

Passport

Valid for at least six months beyond your contract, with empty pages. Renew early if you need to.

Sometimes

Health check

Korea and China do a medical check after you arrive, and some programs ask for a form first.

Easy to forget

Photos and transcripts

Passport photos in a few sizes, and EPIK asks for sealed university transcripts.

FAQ

Cheap TEFL courses in the UK: your questions

Is a £37 TEFL course legit?

Yes, if it's accredited and the hours are real. Our 120-hour course is accredited by OTCAC and we're CPD-verified. We're also a UK registered learning provider (UKPRN 10089401), and every certificate has a QR code employers can check. It costs less because it's fully online and self-paced, with no classroom costs.

Is TEFLmasters a UK company?

We're a UK registered learning provider, listed on the UK Register of Learning Providers with UKPRN 10089401, with a London office address. Our courses are taught online, so you can study from anywhere.

Do I need a Level 5 TEFL?

Usually not. Most schools and recruiters abroad ask for a 120-hour TEFL, not a specific UK level. Ofqual-regulated Level 5 courses cost much more and are worth it only if a particular employer or program asks for one, so check the job advert first.

Which background check do I need for South Korea?

For the E-2 visa, a Basic DBS check (or Basic Disclosure in Scotland) is the usual route, with an apostille from the FCDO Legalisation Office. An ACRO Police Certificate is also accepted. It should be issued within six months of your start date.

Can I teach in Europe after Brexit?

Yes, but you'll usually need a visa or a program. Spain's language assistant program and the British Council's English Language Assistants scheme accept UK applicants, and some private schools sponsor visas, especially outside Western Europe.

Can I teach English in the UK with a TEFL?

A TEFL is great for teaching online and abroad. Most British Council accredited language schools in the UK ask for a CELTA or Trinity CertTESOL, so if you want to teach in a UK language school, check what they require.

Can I pay in pounds?

You pay in US dollars by card or PayPal, and your bank converts it, so $49 is about £37. Some UK cards add a small foreign transaction fee, and many app banks don't.

How long does the course take?

It's self-paced. Our 120-hour Premium TEFL gives you 12 months to finish and our other courses give you 24, and many people finish much sooner.
