Teach English in Spain: visas, pay and jobs

Tapas, sunshine and a short walk to the beach or the mountains. Spain is one of the most popular places in Europe to teach English, but the rules are very different if you don't have an EU passport. Here's how each route works, what you'll earn and what you'll have left at the end of the month.

Visas and routes

Three ways to teach English in Spain

Which one is right for you depends mostly on your passport. Rules change, so always check with the Spanish consulate before you apply.

EU citizens

Including Irish citizens and anyone with a second EU passport.

  • Work freelyNo visa needed. Register as a resident and get your NIE number when you arrive.
  • Apply to academies directlyMost hire in person or online in late August and September.
  • A TEFL is the keyMany academies ask for a TEFL more than a degree.

Auxiliares de Conversación

For citizens of partner countries, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines and India.

  • Language assistant in a public school14 to 16 hours a week for a stipend of €800 a month, with more in some regions.
  • November to MayFor 2026-27 the program runs from November 1 to May 31, and you apply online months before.
  • A visa through the programYour placement letter is what you take to the consulate. Official program page

Student visa or online

For non-EU teachers who don't fit the Auxiliares rules.

  • Student visaStudy a recognized course, such as Spanish, and work part time alongside it.
  • Teach onlineSpain's digital nomad visa is for remote workers with a steady income from outside Spain.
  • Private lessonsOnly work you're legally allowed to do on your visa. Check the rules first.

Don't work on a tourist stay. Non-EU visitors can stay up to 90 days but can't work. Some academies still offer cash-in-hand jobs, but working without the right visa can lead to fines and a ban from the Schengen area.

FAQ

Teaching English in Spain: your questions

Can Americans teach English in Spain?

Yes, but it's harder than for EU citizens, because academies rarely sponsor work visas. Most Americans go through the Auxiliares de Conversación program, which gives you a visa and a placement in a public school. Others come on a student visa, which lets you work part time.

Do I need a TEFL to teach English in Spain?

For academies, yes in most cases. Job adverts usually ask for a TEFL, CELTA or a similar qualification. The Auxiliares program doesn't require one, but a TEFL helps you plan lessons and pick up well-paid private students on the side.

How much do English teachers earn in Spain?

Auxiliares get a stipend of €800 a month for 14 to 16 hours a week, with more in some regions such as Madrid. Full-time academy teachers usually earn about €1,200 to €1,600 a month, and private lessons pay around €15 to €25 an hour.

Can I teach English in Spain without a degree?

Sometimes. If you have an EU passport, many academies care more about your TEFL and your English than a degree. For the Auxiliares program you need a degree or to have finished at least two years of college.

Can UK citizens still teach in Spain after Brexit?

Yes, but UK citizens now need a visa like other non-EU teachers. The Auxiliares program is open to UK applicants, and a student visa is another route. Irish citizens can still work in Spain freely as EU citizens.

Is there an age limit for the Auxiliares program?

Yes. For 2026-27, new applicants had to be at least 18 on January 1, 2026, and under 45 on January 1, 2027. Check the Ministry's page for the next year's rules.

When is the best time to look for jobs in Spain?

Academies hire most in late August and September, before the school year starts, with a smaller wave in January. The Auxiliares program runs from November to May, and you apply months before.

Is CELTA better than a TEFL for Spain?

Some academies, especially in Madrid and Barcelona, prefer CELTA or Trinity CertTESOL, but many accept an accredited 120-hour TEFL. See our guide to Online TEFL vs CELTA for when CELTA is worth the extra cost.
